There are the well-known pieces, such as Augustus Franzoni s Holocaust Memorial off Whalley Avenue; the obvious-but-mysterious, like the huge "On High" sculpture by Alexander Liberman, between the Federal Building and City Hall, which was created from a discarded tank; and the missing, such as the portraits of Roger Sherman, James Hillhouse and former Mayor John Murphy. One man who helped perpetuate the myth was Alexander Liberman, the domineering Ukraine-born painter and sculptor who served as Cond Nast's editorial director from 1962 to 1994. According to one designer who worked with him, Liberman was prone to repeating, "Green is death on the newsstand!"and so the company's editors and art directors began to avoid the hue. (Slate)
