Lustrous visions, cut from stone Jul 13, 2008
It comes from the workshop of the Florentine sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio, dating from around 1490. The 16th-century Romans used stone tiles from the Baths of Caracalla for their monumental tables, whose scrolling, geometric designs sometimes evoke the ceilings of Baroque churches. Originally thought to be a work by Andrea del Verrocchio, the Florentine sculptor, painter and teacher of , a 1997 study concluded that Lorenzo de' Medici is by an unknown Italian artist. Recent scholarship indicates that the bust was based on the politician's likeness by the Renaissance wax portraitist Orsino Benintendi while he was supervised by Verrocchio. (Suite101.com)

Leonardo grew up with his father I don t know where his mother was and when he was about 14, it became apparent that he was talented, so his father sent him to study with one of the best-known painters of the time, Andrea del Verrocchio. It turned out to be a bad move for del Verrocchio. (Montana Standard, MT)

Since he was illegitimate, he could not attend university, but he displayed promise at drawing as a teen and was given an apprenticeship with the Florentine artist and engineer Andrea del Verrocchio. A beautiful mind: Along with "Mona Lisa" and "The Last Supper," most prominent among his surviving paintings, he left thousands of notebook pages filled with ideas, discoveries, drawings and line after line of notes scrawled in his bewildering backward handwriting.
