To some extent, then, "Women Impressionists" merely attempts to restore to Marie Bracquemond (1840-1916), Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), Eva Gonzals (1847-1883) and Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) the respect they enjoyed from their fellow painters. Even from Edgar Degas (1834-1917), perhaps the most profound European painter of his era, derided as a misogynist at times for his almost clinical portrayals of women. The French artist Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was admitted to the 1864 Salon de Paris and then rejected at the same time as prominent male impressionists, with whom she continued to exhibit. This suggests some equality of opportunity at the time, but male curators, critics and collectors later suppressed her great qualities; she was too often appendixed as an appendage - Fragonard's grand-niece, Manet's sister-in-law. There is an overlap between her and Berthe Morisot, and even Suzanne Valadon, but this is less a consequence of their awareness of each other's work than of their drinking at the same well. The nearest thing to Cassatt's unsentimental imagery of mothers effacing themselves before their ebullient children is probably Valadon's iconography of adolescence, of pubescent girls being groomed for male appetites, but the spirit is as different from Cassatt's as the brothel is from the nursery.
