News and Articles on De Stijl

The inspired fashion of Yves Saint Laurent  Jun 4, 2008
The little A-line shifts and boxy jackets of the mid-Sixties may have looked deceptively simple, but by borrowing prints from Mondrian, De Stijl and Picasso, YSL made a case for them to be regarded as populist art and for himself to be seen as an artist. The fact that by the mid-Seventies he was fraternising with leading actors (Deneuve), dancers (Nureyev) and artists (Warhol) placed him at the centre of the Paris Zeitgeist. (Times Online)

White Stripes Sued By Former Quebec Radio Host  Feb 8, 2008
The White Stripes suddenly find themselves in hot water over a sample they used on their eight-year-old De Stijl album ... Payette claims the dynamic duo never obtained permission to use the clip and violated her privacy under Quebec law, so she's suing the band, Third Man Records and BMG Music Publishing Canada for $70,000 and requesting that all copies of De Stijl be removed from stores. Classic cool  Dec 10, 2007
All of this work had roots in earlier modernist developments, the Bauhaus in Germany, the De Stijl in Holland and the International Style in general. Most of the period's main figures created designs in multiple styles. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

The White Stripes - Icky Thump  Jun 22, 2007
On their sophomore album, De Stijl, they drew lines akin to that austere Belgian art movement, then colored outside the box with snatches of violin. The mere introduction of a bass line (Elephants Seven Nation Army) became revelatory. (Paste Magazine)

The pieces represent avant-garde art movements such as Cubism, Futurism, Expressionism, De Stijl (or Neo-Plasticism), Constructivism, Dadaism, Surrealism and other abstract styles. "Why did these people start to experiment with representing reality in a radically different way?" van de Guchte said. (Jacksonville Business Journal, FL)

Thoroughly modern Mondrian for Corcoran (Ann Geracimos and Kevin Chaffee)  Mar 16, 2007
The auto ensured a stunning entrance, as did the grand staircase decorated for the occasion with copies of the so-called Red Blue Chair, a token of the De Stijl movement (1918-23), with the original on loan from New York's Museum of Modern Art in an upstairs gallery. "This definitely marks a new leaf for the Corcoran," said Raymond Garcia, a contemporary art collector and former board member. (Washington Times, DC)
