Don Davis of the Bellingham Fire Department says firefighters searched the nearly block-long building before getting out themselves on Monday afternoon. The four-alarm blaze broke out at about 1 p.m. in the three-story building that housed a Japanese restaurant, an office, an art gallery, a credit union and a clock and antique shop, among other businesses. The Memorial Day tradition began in 1982 when U.S. Navy and Korean War veteran Don Davis and his late wife, Arlene, expressed an interest in an Avenue of Flags after their 21-year-old son, Neil, also a Navy veteran, was killed in a car accident in Florida in February 1982. The Davis' daughter, Carolyn Davis Clark, explains that her parents had seen an Avenue of Flags at Sutherland, Iowa. (Sioux City Journal, IO)

ARTIST DON DAVIS / NASA Scientific evidence now supports the hypothesis that a major asteroid or comet impact occurred in the Caribbean region at the boundary of the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods in Earth's geologic history, as illustrated in this drawing.
