    Look in the corners and there's a deceptively simple portrait from Fairfield Porter (''Katie,'' 1964), a painter known more for his landscapes but here, painting in intimate tones of gray and soft butterscotch, producing a casual portrait of quiet vulnerability that's elegantly disarming. A tightly rendered ''Academic Study of a Male Nude'' (circa 1855) by Frank Vincent DuMond is not only beautifully drawn and unflinching - the man is old, weathered and bent - it's also empathetically seeded...     Ted and I both had wanted to have our portraits done by Fairfield Porter, and we d thought that it would be cheaper if he painted us in tandem and then we could cut it apart and each take half. But when he d posed us, he sat us so close together on the couch that we couldn t slice a straight line between us and I d had to buy Ted out. (New York Press)
