It is unclear where the painting had been before 1800, when a Flemish engraver made a reproductive print and attributed the original to the Dutch painter Frans Hals without realizing the face in the picture was that of Rembrandt. When viewing art, less can be more Jun 7, 2008
Someone has surely called today's Rijksmuseum speed-dial, mini-golf culture, or a Best Of spinoff of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals and Jan Steen, or a dumbed-down compilation of Greatest Dutch Hits. I went inside for 10, about $15, and the answer to all the contempt is no way. (International Herald Tribune -- Technology)
IlanaRaviv Receives Women of the Year Award Mar 17, 2008
"The work emanates from itself with a strong presence. Each line dictates another and each shape creates a new shape. It is built on the anatomy of art and not on the anatomy of the subject. These elements are derived from the works of maestros like Titian, Veronese, El Greco, Frans Hals, Velasques, Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse, De Kooning, as well as contemporary American artist Knox Martin. "The essence of the work revolves around discovery itself and not on illustration or description. It is art... (AbsoluteArts.com)

Goodnight Siena Oct 24, 2007
I had my reservations about the last show at the National Gallery, but it included masterpieces by Rembrandt and Frans Hals. This is a far more thoughtful exhibition, and yet in the end it is asking us not to engage with the great medieval art of Siena - which is in itself an intellectual and aesthetic challenge for the modern viewer - but to be so steeped in that art, to so take it for granted, that we have time and patience to pursue the minor artists at the fag end of the tradition. Fine tribute to a forgotten master Jun 27, 2007
He was a big man, athletic, with light red hair, who trimmed his golden beard van Dyke style and who laughed and wore his hat with all the panache of a Frans Hals cavalier. He moved with the grace of a boxer and he knew how to break in a horse. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)
A new class of portrait Jun 26, 2007

Rick Steves: Dutch Haarlem Feb 18, 2007
" A Dutch Masters kind of town, Haarlem is a good place to start a European trip. In small-town Holland, cultural differences are obvious and travel is easy. I see the Netherlands as a cultural wading pool that slopes gradually into the more challenging waters of central Europe. While mighty Amsterdam is just a 20-minute train ride away, cute Haarlem provides a more comfy base and a more genteel experience. For half the price of a simple Amsterdam hotel, the tourist office can set you up in the... (San Francisco Chronicle -- Travel)

Before then few portraits depict their subject's teeth: the Mona Lisa may be smiling enigmatically, but her lips remain sealed; and even Frans Hals Laughing Cavalier keeps his mouth tight shut. The teeth of Queen Elizabeth I were black, and many of them had fallen out; while Louis XIV suffered a broken jaw when his physicians attempted to remove his rotten molars. (BBC News -- UK)

The exhibit, Rembrandt and the Golden Age of Dutch Art: Treasures from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, also includes self-portraits, still lifes and landscapes painted by other Dutch masters such as Jan Steen, Frans Hals, Jacob van Ruisdael, Jan van Goyen and Nicholaes Maes.
