Vermeer painting set for New York Aug 14, 2009
Along with Rembrandt and Frans Hals, Vermeer is considered one of the greatest Dutch artists, however only 36 of his paintings survive today. The exhibition opens September 10 and runs until November 29. (BBC News -- Entertainment)

At Colnaghi, meanwhile, the two star pieces a Frans Hals portrait of St Mark and a grand 16th-century painting of David and Bathsheba, by Cranach were still unsold at the end of the first day, but a Peter Paul Rubens portrait of a young man, painted between 1610 and 1613, was snapped up for just over 5m.
