News and Articles on Gillian Ayres
Secret payouts worth millions for art lost in fire Jan 15, 2007 The artist Gillian Ayres, the husband of the late Helen Chadwick, the novelist Shirley Conran and the heirs of the painter Patrick Heron were among those involved in the legal action. Through their lawyers, they claimed the storage warehouse in east London, which caught fire in May 2004, was wholly unsuitable for high-value fine art, had inadequate fire detection and was "a disaster waiting to happen". (Guardian Unlimited -- UK)
When arsonists set Hell alight Dec 26, 2006 Other key pieces lost included 50 important works by the abstract painter Patrick Heron, 18 works by Gillian Ayres, and work by Patrick Caulfield, the Chapman brothers, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Barry Flanagan, Chris Ofili and Paula Rego. A significant number were from the collection of Charles Saatchi. (TimesOnline)
Bold, cute, chaotic - it's all at the Royal Academy Jun 8, 2006 The academician Norman Ackroyd was responsible for hanging the prints in the show, and was enthusiastic not only about a linocut by Gillian Ayres, Turner-prize nominated last year, but also a brace of "incredibly beautiful" woodcuts by Julian Meredith. He is a beekeeper on the North York moors. (Guardian Unlimited -- UK)
