    Carved in gray limestone in the 6th century A.D. under the Wei dynasty, the figure in high relief was once part of a much larger scene on the walls of one of the caves at Longmen, the Buddhist Chinese site as famous in the Far East as Chartres is to admirers of Romanesque and Gothic art in France. An almost identical figure in the Longmen Museum at Zhengzhou in Henan Province was reproduced in Sotheby's catalogue to goad would-be bidders. (International Herald Tribune -- Arts)

    Gothic art began with The Nightmare, a painting which shocked the public and critics of the time alike, as Fuseli intended, when he put it on display at the Royal Academy in 1782.     In Gothic art and literature, dead is not necessarily really dead: in the Gothic world scientists re-animate corpses, spirits greet us from the afterlife, graveyards teem with ghosts and resurrection men. During the period dealt with in Gothic Nightmares, scientists were taking over from the clergy in shaping people's imaginings of life's beginning and ending; the art in this show represents a sort of rear guard.
