Mar 1, 2009 In the Netherlands and England, landscape struggled for pride of place alongside portraiture, with its royal subjects and opulent props; in Paris, which was already the center of the art world in the 19th century, it was history painting - with its imposing scale, somber palette, and literary themes - that lorded over the annual Salon.
