    Ashevak, Mars win GG art awards  Mar 30, 2008
    Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak and painter Alex Janvier were announced Tuesday as winners of this year's Governor General's Awards in visual and media arts. Other winners for artistic achievement are Quebec filmmaker Serge Giguere, sculptor Michel Goulet and multidisciplinarian artists Tanya Mars and Eric Metcalfe. (Brantford Expositor)

    Other recipients announced yesterday in Montreal are Kenojuak Ashevak, internationally recognized Inuit printmaker; Michel Goulet, veteran Montreal-based sculptor; Serge Gigure, the Quebec filmmaker given a Hot Docs retrospective in Toronto in 2006; Alex Janvier, the great Dene Nations painter from Cold Lake, Alta. and Eric Metcalfe, the veteran Vancouver-based multimedia artist.     Other visual arts award winners are Kenojuak Ashevak, Serge Gigure, Michel Goulet, Alex Janvier, and Tanya Mars. Chantal Gilbert won the Saidye Bronfman Award for excellence in the fine crafts and Shirley Thomson won the outstanding contribution award for her work as a cultural administrator, gallery director and arts advocate.     At 80, Kenojuak Ashevak is probably the country's best known and most honoured Inuit artist. One of the original printmakers from the famous Cape Dorset workshop in what is now Nunavut, she's been a prolific artist for more than 50 years. (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)
