The gifts, evidenced by the ornately framed portraits that litter his loft, are the hard-won results of his mastery of a finicky process, fraught with variables, that French artist and chemist Louis Daguerre unveiled to the world in 1839. Its heyday lasted barely more than a decade, as daguerreotypists travelled from town to town, documenting the dead as well as the living, before less-cumbersome processes supplanted it. "Louis Daguerre is considered the father of photography in 1839.He managed the Diorama theater in Paris and, like many in his era, "fascinated with taking that image light reflected up onto that piece of glass and preserving it. People worked on that for generations," Myers said. "Instead of live actors, the Diorama (which burned down) had huge, translucent, 40-foot by 70-foot sheets of fabric they projected light onto.
