Blake Morrison browses through novel works by Henri Matisse, Joseph Cornell and Paula Rego ... When the book is as substantial as Mir;'s Le Courtisan Grotesque, Paula Rego's version of Jane Eyre or Balthus's Wuthering Heights (bound in goatskin dyed grey-green to "evoke the Yorkshire moors"), it is frustrating not to be able to leaf through. " To achieve this verisimilitude, Mueck goes through an exacting process. His works begin as plaster models, sometimes accompanied by drawings, through which he determines posture and scale. He then sculpts the pieces in clay, using metal and wire armatures in the larger ones. These he casts in fiberglass or silicon. Fleshy details are painted on. Resin eyeballs are added. It was never going to tell the story of contemporary art in Britain in the past 23 years, but a wider choice from the shortlisted artists (thereby including Lucian Freud, Derek Jarman, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Paula Rego, Tracey Emin and so on) would have made a richer picture. Douglas Gordon's 24-hour Psycho isn't here either (it was considered when Gordon won in 1996, but wasn't in the Turner show). (Scotsman)

This year RCA Secret featured hidden pieces by Paula Rego, Yoko Ono, Julian Opie, Grayson Perry and Peter Blake, as well as cards by Hirst and Emin. Less well-known established artists, designers and illustrators also joined the current crop of students and graduates from the RCA in donating original work to help raise money for the college's awards fund for students. Since any prize must be partly judged by its omissions, here are some artists who have not won the Turner, and are now either dead or too old to qualify: Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Richard Hamilton, Paula Rego, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Helen Chadwick, Susan Hiller. They're not all my favourites, just artists with a reasonable claim. (Independent)
