Cyndi's back, with a little help from her friends  Jun 4, 2008
"In photorealism, they wouldn't take your typical portrait. It would be a different framing of things," she says. "The forefront and the background were equal. Nothing in the background was fuzzy. Everything was equal, do you know what I mean? And that is kind of what drove me on, most of my life. For a long, long time, I thought that was who I was about to be, this painter.". (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)

More of this story  May 17, 2008
Most of the works on display by the septuagenarian San Francisco artist are graphite drawings, in which she achieves an extraordinary photorealism. The storm-tossed water, boxing gloves and rose-colored glasses in "Untitled Self-Portrait" are mesmerizing illusions, appearing more real than it would seem possible with the medium. (Los Angeles Downtown News, CA)

We don't have to go through the studio system to bring a new vision to life.  Feb 4, 2008
To crank up the photorealism of the digital effects created for the fold-ins, they added layers of textures and materials shot in live-action, followed by another overlay of digital effects--falling dirt, candy exploding out of a piata--to make them even more convincing. Chris Carbone, an analyst with Social Technologies, thinks the visual-effects trend is about ratcheting up expectations. (FastCompany)

Review: 'Persepolis' is glorious  Jan 15, 2008
Not that this hand-drawn French production's simple black-on-white graphics approach the depth of Pixar's "Ratatouille," but the quest for photorealism is not the only game in town. Co-directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, based on Satrapi's graphic novels, "Persepolis" has some of the blithe, spindly finesse of a New Yorker cartoon, but a cartoon that at any given moment threatens to descend into inky expressionist gloom. (CNN -- Showbiz)

Five Corners Two  Nov 18, 2007
White says that he attempts to avoid the typical "photorealism" that is common to the figurative genre. Instead, the curly haired artist veers toward interpretation through intense color selections, abstract mixtures, the personality of the individual subject and their mystifying surroundings. In most works, Dresden- and Berlin-based Havekost blends photorealism with abstraction to create disturbing images that are open to interpretation. In one triptych, Havekost paints three similar compositions and alters each by blocking out parts with gray or black paint. (Bloomberg -- Germany)

All grown up  Sep 20, 2007
It was undoubtedly groundbreaking animation, but audiences were generally not nearly as impressed by the photorealism as they were expecting to be. Even worse, the fact that the animation did get close to representing the subtle expressions and movement of humans gave many people the creeps. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Technology)

Errata-Optika heats up art scene  Sep 15, 2007
"Their approach is different from the general trend of photorealism. There is no hint of forced photorealism in their work. (Jakarta Post, Indonesia -- Features)

(Yahoo! Wire -- Entertainment News)

'Ratatouille' is a new classic  Jul 9, 2007
After every Pixar film, you wonder how animation can get any better, but it continues to do so -- so much that the art no longer imitates real life, it looks "better than real."Pixar, however, isn't going entirely for photorealism -- it maintains a cartoony look in its characters, a nostalgic move that can only be called brilliant. I think someone needs to tell the folks at Pixar that they're making their jobs harder every time they release a masterpiece. (Fresno Bee -- Lifestyle)

    * Damien Hirst beats Jeff Koons, hands down  Jun 14, 2007
Styles are scrambled X woodcut, cartoon, photorealism, oilpaint squeezed out like toothpaste, but each portrayed with flawlessly invisible brushwork. Silver overprints turn white or vanish in certain lights, so that you notice only this Jolly Green Giant or that lurking leafprint from unexpected angles in the gallery. (Taipei Times, Taiwan -- Business)

Interview with Artist Pamelina H  Jun 10, 2007
I enjoy photorealism, but not in the traditional sense. I like the idea of creating images of unreal subjects and making them look as real as possible. (Suite101.com)

'Star Wars' on TV: These are the clones you're looking for  May 30, 2007
The mix was a purposeful one, said supervising director Dave Filoni, who had worked previously on the animated Nickelodeon series "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Filoni showed the crowd pre-production character sculptures that were geared toward creating iconic visages and not overreaching for photorealism that can make many CGI features seem oddly disconcerting. He said the hope was to avoid "the vacant" look that has undermined many past CGI features. (Sun-Sentinel.com)

    M.C.Escher Artist and Illusionist  May 6, 2007

Vision vs. visionary -- see what Monet, Degas saw  Apr 17, 2007
Someone who's doing photorealism wouldn't find that the blurred image was going to work for him. " So, if Degas couldn't clearly see the image he was making, how did he create it? "That's the hardest thing to answer," Marmor replies. "He knew what he was trying to paint. (San Francisco Chronicle)

Not really there  Mar 12, 2007
Rather than the attempted photorealism of Square's famous misstep Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within or 2004's The Polar Express (which polarized viewers between repulsion and fascination), the most convincing virtual characters are usually stylised creations, such as Ico's beautiful Yorda, The Sands of Time's nimble Prince of Persia or Tomb Raider's buxom Lara Croft. The artists at Pixar certainly take great care to stylise their (rare) human characters, avoiding tumbling into the valley. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Technology)

Warren Spector on Game Narratives  Mar 8, 2007
Next he moved into how character graphics are advancing, which are important for compelling narrative in that good graphics, whether attempting photorealism or going for a more stylistic approach, create more believable characters. Indigo Prophecy, Final Fantasy XII, Mass Effect, and Alyx from Half-Life 2 were prime example of this, according to Spector, who went on to say character art has obviously come a long way with "believable human figures in still images." However good the graphics get,... (IGN PC Games)

    Blurring lines  Feb 24, 2007
" Being an effective digital artist means not just knowing how to use a computer, but knowing the complexity of what you're trying to recreate. Most CG movies have shied away from being too ambitious with their human representations with characters often styled in exaggerated cartoon forms, as they were in The Incredibles. Square Pictures' 2001 title Final Fantasy is considered one of the few full-length movies to achieve almost-perfect photorealism through CG technology. However, with the... Cheapskate's Guide: The Best in Free Software  Feb 21, 2007
This 3D modeling tool matches what its developers call the "pencil" stage of designing when you make quick, slightly rough-edged drawings of -solid objects, complete with shadows but without the photorealism of commercial packages. This is the least intuitive of Google's software offerings, but it's easier to use than any rival 3D programs. (Fox News -- Views)

Heavy Rain an emotional breakthrough  Jan 19, 2007
" As well-received the Heavy Rain trailer was, there were complaints about its unprecedented realism. Some writers commented that because Quantic Dream has so closely approached photorealism, slight imperfections in the virtual actor such as when the virtual Ms. Bancilhon's eyes seem glassy or when her lips are slightly out-of-sync make the whole thing disturbing, rather than compelling. In other words, they argue that Heavy Rain suffers from the Uncanny Valley effect, where virtual humans... (Globe and Mail -- Technology)

Not just postcards from London  Dec 3, 2006
His light anticipates that of Impressionism, and his acutely observant descriptions look forward to the photo-derived Precisionism of Charles Sheeler, the Photorealism of Richard Estes , and the cityscapes of Rackstraw Downes, a contemporary realist who does not use photographic aids. And the tension between the illusory and the abstract, realized most exquisitely in Canaletto's deftly linear ink drawings, has been a central preoccupation for painters throughout the history of modern art. (Boston Globe -- Living)

Gizmodo Frankenfight: Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360  Nov 23, 2006
" How is it that the PS3 wins (or ties for the win) in 4 out of 7 categories and comes in 3rd place... Why are you such playa haters?! says: Seems to me that the Wii and 360 (as soon as the price drops) are the best bets this cycle. This is only reinforced by Microsoft pulling PS3 exclusives over to their system. I've already got my Wii, so I suppose I'll just be hitting refresh until the price drops on the 360. :) says: and since XBox brings TV and movie rentals to Windows Live... and Windows... Herd mentality  Nov 17, 2006
The push toward photorealism in animation works in favor of cuddly animals but against people -- there becomes something unsettling about realistic-looking computer-generated people ... But less-stylized human characters that come closer to photorealism can trigger repulsion. (AZCentral -- Entertainment)

Artist's impressionistic still lifes at Butler  Jun 27, 2006
But unlike Richard Estes, another artist who made a market in painting mirror and glass reflections, Fish doesn't strive for photorealism in her paintings; rather, hers is a painterly, almost impressionistic -- approach. Through Aug. 20 the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown is exhibiting 18 of her works on paper in Janet Fish: Pastels. (Akron Beacon Journal, OH -- Entertainment)

Who's giggling at the back?  Feb 12, 2006
It's done in a sort of fuzzy photorealism that might inflect art history but is a winning sight gag in itself, subtly distilling their addled state. Or take Likeable Communist Woman - the title alone is irreducibly comic, let alone the parody of socialist realism or the woman's ludicrous kepi. (Guardian Unlimited -- Arts)
