In December 1981, when San Francisco opened its new Moscone Convention Center, the lobby included a bust by Benicia artist Robert Arneson of the mayor who was slain moments before Milk. The ceramic sculpture commissioned for $37,000 captured Moscone's ebullient personality - and sat atop a pedestal adorned with crude allusions to the killings, such as blood-like splatters of red glaze and the words "BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG.". Several artists identified with the Funk movement, including Robert Arneson and William T. Wiley, were on the faculty of UC Davis with DeForest, who began teaching there in 1965.
