News and Articles on Robert Gober

MCASD doffs hat to Davies in exhibit  Oct 6, 2008
On the audio guide to the show, he has curators past and present talking about works they sought and succeeded in adding to the collection: Toby Kamps on the kinetic sculpture by Martin Kersel ( Twist, 1993); Madeline Grynsztejn on the Robert Gober wall sculpture ( Drains, 1990); and Elizabeth Armstrong on a David Reed painting ( #312-3 (for Ellen Browning Scripps), 1992, 1996, 1998). I feel as if this show, the collection is a record of our exhibition activity, a residue of that. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

‘Outsiders’ exhibit their art at Menil’s ‘NeoHooDoo’  Jul 8, 2008
The exhibition is packed with heavy weights: John Cage, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robert Gober, George Smith, Dario Robleto, many more. Don t miss this exhibition. (Woodlands Villager, TX)

Top of the drops  May 28, 2008
But the large-scale, space-consuming, immersive environments that artists like Robert Gober, Schneider, Christophe B. chel, Vito Acconci and Kippenberger himself constructed cannot be done any sort of justice in group exhibitions. (Guardian Unlimited -- Arts)

Reassembled, 'Broken Home' poses fresh questions  Apr 6, 2008
Most of the works didn't sell, but the show garnered plenty of attention, thanks to the appearance of such artists as Acconci, Gonzalez-Torres, Robert Gober, and Thomas Demand. Michael Rush, the director of the Rose Art Museum, has reassembled "Broken Home" for viewers to consider more than a decade on. (Boston Globe)

AGO bags star Canadian work in Biennale  Aug 19, 2007
"You have international artists like Ann Hamilton, Robert Gober and Kiki Smith" he says, citing artists now in solid mid-career, "but then there is the younger generation like Sarah Sze and [the late] Jason Rhoades." Altmejd, he says, is a master of the medium, able to create a totality in which every detail contributes in a way that is clearly consistent thematically. Donors Hartman and Goldman have never seen The Index, though they own an earlier small work by Altmejd, which they bought at the... (Globe and Mail)

Guggenheim exhibit explores the forms of space  Jul 21, 2007
Part of "Untitled (Dance Floor)" by Piotr Uklanski, on view at the Guggenheim. (Todd Heisler/The New York Times). (International Herald Tribune -- Arts)

YouTube for Artists:  Mar 22, 2007
A stack of newspapers on the floor of a Chelsea gallery (like by Robert Gober) has a very different set of meanings from a pile of recycling in your hallway at home. For this reason, artists are understandably reluctant to display their work within the honky-tonk, lowest-common-denominator context of YouTube. (Slate)

Magritte amuses and befuddles  Feb 19, 2007
I walk past an untitled Robert Gober sculpture that consists of a beeswax reproduction of a severed leg positioned on the floor as if it's sticking out of the wall. In one sense it's very realistic; you can see dark, wispy hairs standing out against pale skin directly above the single leather shoe. (Fresno Bee -- Lifestyle)

Anxiety and mystery are woven into her sculpture  Jan 29, 2007
Kiki Smith, Robert Gober , and Amy Sillman are just three much admired contemporary artists who have evolved more or less consciously under the spell of her psychologically charged, viscerally physical, restlessly exploratory art. I'm not a total fan; sometimes a heavy-handed theatricality in her work puts me off. (Boston Globe)
