Though Ervin donated many of the works in the present collection, his friend Alan Renshaw (who oversaw the implementation of Ervin's bequest) contributed many of the finest works, including Margaret Preston's woodcut of Mosman bridge. Some of the earliest works in the Ervin collection are by two unknown primitive-style artists who documented Cobham Hall, the grand manor house built by Solomon Wiseman on a bend of the Hawkesbury River.
